While many people travel to Flagstaff for its unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and laid-back, cool vibe, what they don’t know is that Flagstaff, Arizona is becoming a significant hub for advanced science and technology companies, and Katalyst Space Technologies is leading the charge with groundbreaking work in satellite servicing. Recently, Katalyst was selected for a critical mission by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) that will extend the functional life of military satellites through on-orbit servicing.
Katalyst’s innovation focuses on designing a “retrofit attachment system” and a “space domain awareness” sensor that enables in-space installation on satellites, meeting urgent military and commercial demands. This retrofit system, attaching to satellites’ launch adapter rings, allows payloads to be integrated even on satellites not initially designed for in-orbit modifications—a pioneering approach that supports the U.S. Space Force’s GEO satellite fleet.
With the mission scheduled for 2025, Katalyst's contributions could revolutionize how we think about space asset longevity and adaptability, underscoring Flagstaff's role in advancing space technology and national security.
